Laptop disposal
questions answered

Q.What is laptop disposal and why does it matter?

Laptop disposal is the secure decommissioning of end-of-life laptops — covering certified data destruction, physical recycling, and documentation. It matters because every business laptop contains sensitive data: emails, documents, passwords, and potentially personal data covered by UK GDPR. Simply discarding a laptop without secure data destruction constitutes a potential data breach under the Data Protection Act 2018, carrying ICO fines and reputational risk.

Q.How is data destroyed from a laptop before disposal?

Coreitech uses two methods depending on the laptop. For traditional HDD-based laptops, NIST 800-88 compliant software erasure overwrites the drive multiple times. For SSD-based laptops (all modern MacBooks, Dell, HP, and Lenovo ultrabooks), we use ATA Secure Erase or cryptographic erasure — or physical shredding of the drive for maximum security. A certificate of erasure is issued per device confirming the method used.

Q.How do you handle MacBook disposal — especially soldered SSDs?

Modern MacBooks (2016 onwards) use soldered-on SSD storage that cannot be removed. For these devices, Coreitech performs a combination of cryptographic key destruction (via Apple's T2 Secure Enclave or M-series chip) and software-level secure erase where possible. For maximum assurance, the entire laptop is physically shredded. All M-series MacBooks (M1, M2, M3) are handled with specific Apple Silicon data destruction protocols.

Q.Can I get money back for old laptops?

Yes. Laptops from 2019 onwards often have significant residual value after certified data destruction. Coreitech assesses each device and provides a buy-back price based on age, spec, and condition. The value is credited against your disposal invoice — for modern MacBooks and premium business laptops, this can offset the cost of disposal entirely. We will never undervalue your assets.

Q.Do you collect laptops for disposal in bulk?

Yes. Coreitech provides bulk laptop collection for business disposals across the UK. Whether you have 5 laptops from a team departure or 500 from a full office refresh, we collect, process, and document every device. Same-day collection is available across London. A pre-collection intake form helps us plan resources to match your volumes.

Q.Is IT laptop disposal different for schools and public sector?

The process is the same, but many schools and public sector organisations have specific obligations under DfE guidance (schools) or HMG IA standards (government). Coreitech is experienced in supporting schools during device refresh cycles — managing the disposal of large batches of older devices typically sourced through Pupil Premium or DfE funded programmes, providing documentation suitable for audits.
