Q.What is secure IT disposal?
Secure IT disposal is the end-to-end managed decommissioning of IT assets in a way that is both data-secure and environmentally responsible. It combines certified data destruction (software erasure or physical shredding), WEEE-compliant recycling or resale, full chain-of-custody documentation, and GDPR-compliant certificates of destruction. Unlike skip-it-in-the-bin disposal, secure ITAD provides evidenced, auditable proof that data has been permanently destroyed.
Q.What is the difference between IT disposal and data destruction?
Data destruction refers specifically to the act of permanently destroying data stored on media. IT disposal (or ITAD) is the broader process of decommissioning end-of-life equipment — which includes data destruction as a mandatory first step, followed by physical handling of the hardware through responsible recycling, resale, or certified destruction. You can have data destruction without IT disposal (e.g., just shredding drives from a working machine), but you cannot have secure IT disposal without data destruction.
Q.Is secure IT disposal the same as WEEE recycling?
No. WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) recycling covers the environmental disposal of electronic equipment to prevent hazardous materials entering landfill. It does not address data security. Secure IT disposal incorporates WEEE compliance as its environmental component, but the critical additional element is certified data destruction — which WEEE recycling alone does not provide. A business that sends equipment to a WEEE recycler without first performing data destruction remains exposed to a data breach.
Q.Do I need to be present for IT asset collection?
You or a nominated representative should be present at collection to sign the collection manifest confirming the assets handed over. This forms the beginning of the chain-of-custody documentation. For large-scale collections or office clearances, Coreitech can work directly with your facilities or IT management teams to coordinate access and asset identification.
Q.How do you handle assets that have residual value?
Coreitech's policy is to maximise the responsible reuse of IT assets wherever possible after certified data destruction. Assets that pass quality testing are refurbished and resold to extend their useful life — reducing environmental impact and generating a financial return for you. The agreed residual value share is deducted from your disposal invoice, often making disposal cost-neutral or even income-positive for larger batches.
